Digestion and Acupuncture

Here we go.  We're going to talk about it.  Yes, we're going to ask you questions about your poop.  It's a little uncomfortable at first, but if you're experiencing issues with your digestion, you know all the details AND YOUR ACUPUNCTURIST WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT IT!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestion is the earth, the root, the thing that gives your body everything it needs to function.  It's not unlike the actual physiology of your body.  You eat, your digestive system breaks it down and sends the nutrients into your body.  Your body uses the nutrients to make blood, fight disease, recover from injury, work out, and well, it uses the nutrients for everything.  So what happens when your digestive system weakens and it can no longer perform it's duties?  A lot of things happen.  Fatigue, weakness, hair loss, insomnia, skin issues, muscle cramps.  Your digestion is connected to absolutely everything in your body, and it matters if it isn't performing at 100%.

What are some common symptoms of digestive disorders?

  • Bloating

  • Gas

  • Nausea before or after eating

  • Loose stools in the morning

  • More than 1 bowel movement a day

  • Less than 1 bowel movement a day

  • Heart Burn

  • Burning pain in the stomach

  • Constipation

  • Dry Stools

Do you have a diagnosis of IBS, IBD, Ulcerative Colitis, or Chrohn's Disease?

These inflammatory bowel issues are becoming more and more common.  It seems that everyone that has digestive issues leaves the M.D.'s office with one of these diagnosis.  It's a good thing that nothing more serious is going on, but these diseases can make it hard to live a normal life!  You might always be running to the bathroom or have a hard time going on road trips or vacation because you don't know when you'll be able to get to a bathroom!  Or, you never know what you can eat and how it will affect you!

Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation in the digestive system and restore balance.  There are new research studies being published everyday and people with digestive issues should have hope that this is the right treatment for them.  It may take a little time to bring everything back into balance, but the issues most likely didn't happen over night.  Symptoms should get better within 30-90 days for most patients.  If you want to read more about acupuncture and digestive issues, click on the research buttons below!
